WHAT IS WORKPLACE COACHING?
Employee coaching, also commonly referred to as workplace coaching, is a mutually beneficial undertaking which can provide enormous value to individual employees and the organisation as a whole.
The International Coaching Federation describes professional coaching as the process of “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential.” Through coaching, the coach works with the employee to provide a space to develop new skills, reinforce positive behaviours and, ultimately, improve performance.
Coaching is about supporting an individual to gain insights into their mind to enable them to develop new and positive ways of thinking, feeling and acting. Coaching takes a non-directive, client centred and evidence based approach using the core principle that an individual has the capability to change their neural pathways and positively alter their behaviours and beliefs. As coaching uses a non-directive approach, it does not provide the same service as consultancy or specific business advice.

Employee coaching can bring significant positive outcomes to your organisation and can help foster improvements to employee engagement, retention, performance and, ultimately, business outcomes. Research carried out by the International Coaching Federation indicated that 86% of companies saw a return on investment from coaching and 96% of organisations stated that they would repeat coaching (The ICF Global Coaching Client Study).
WHO IS WORKPLACE COACHING FOR?
Any employee can benefit from coaching, from administrators to middle management to key leaders. While certain subsets of an organisation may gravitate towards particular areas, for example leaders are more likely to wish to focus on their management skills whereas administrators may choose to focus on career progression goals, it is important to remember that every individual will get something different out of their coaching sessions and choose to explore areas which are relevant to their personal aspirations.
WHAT WORKPLACE COACHING DOES NOT DO?
Employee coaching is not a substitute for training. Coaching is not a prescriptive process - the coach does not teach specific knowledge for the employee to learn but rather works collaboratively with the employee to provide them a space to explore their development.
Coaching is not therapy. If an employee is facing a mental health concern, they should be directed towards a licensed mental health practitioner.

My coaching model operates on a 1:1, remote basis, with individual sessions typically lasting up to an hour. It is possible to carry out single sessions, however to maximise the value of coaching, it is recommended that the employer and employee both commit to a number of sessions.
